The European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) celebrates its strong connections to many of this year’s Nobel Laureates. Underlining its expertise in Global Health, the Alliance can count among its professors one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as well as significant ties to all three winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Katalin Karikó received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with immunologist Drew Weissman “for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19”.
Professor Karikó obtained her diploma at the University of Szeged (Hungary). Later on she earned a PhD in Szeged and started her research with mRNA. She continued her career in the United States. Since 2021 she has been a research professor at the University of Szeged.
The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Anne L’Huillier, Ferenc Krausz and Pierre Agostini “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter”.
Anne L’Huillier is currently a Professor of Atomic Physics at Lund University (Sweden). She is also a member of the Governing Board at the Institut d’Optique Graduate School at Université Paris-Saclay (France). L’Huillier was a researcher at the Service for the Physics of Atoms and Surfaces, today known as LIDYL, at CEA Saclay from 1982 to 1995. Moreover, L’Huillier collaborates closely with the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto, where she is credited with directly contributing to the advancement of the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Ferenc Krausz is the Chair of Experimental Physics / Laser Physics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching.
Pierre Agostini was a researcher at LIDYL at CEA Saclay (now within the perimeter of Université Paris-Saclay) from 1968 to 2002 and is currently an Emeritus Professor at Ohio State University, in the United States.
All laureates share an international background. From multiple nationalities to moving around the world for their careers and living and working in other countries, they embody EUGLOH values and demonstrate the vital role that international collaboration and cultural diversity can play in advancing the frontiers of human knowledge.
EUGLOH is so happy for its Nobel Prize winners, for the students they inspire and teach every day and for the staff that gain additional visibility for their own work. As the nine member universities continue to work together, their collective impact on academia and society is expected to grow, moving the Alliance forward on its way to becoming a world-class higher education, research and innovation alliance.
