LMU Munich organised and hosted the first onsite EUGLOH Annual Student Research Conference, a significant departure from the previous online and hybrid events. The conference, held on December 5, 2023, was a highlight of the EUGLOHRIA Final Conference on Pandemics and Global Health Crises, showcasing the outstanding research outcomes of the Alliance’s students.
This 4th edition of the EUGLOH Annual Student Research Conference saw 53 eligible students applying with abstracts on the theme "Pandemics and Global Health Crises", from which eight participants were selected to present their work onsite in Munich.
The conference provided a platform for students to exchange ideas with peers and established researchers, aligning with EUGLOH's tradition of encouraging and showcasing excellent research outcomes. Students submitted abstracts on topics ranging from epidemiology and disease modelling to global health policy and governance during health emergencies.
The selection process focused on relevance, scientific soundness, originality and diversity. Eight abstracts from students at Lund University, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Szeged, University of Porto, and Université Paris-Saclay were chosen for presentation.
Despite a dramatic snowstorm in Munich just a couple of days before the conference, the organising team swiftly adapted, ensuring that all but one student could travel to Munich and participate as planned.
The conference, attended by delegations from most EUGLOH Alliance members, saw active engagement from students, researchers, administrative staff, and even presidents and vice-presidents. An anonymous panel of researchers evaluated the poster presentations with respect to their content, visual appeal, presentation, originality, relevance and engagement. The panel ultimately awarded Arezki Guerda, a PhD student at Université Paris-Saclay, the "Best Poster" Prize, which earned him a certificate and an invitation to participate in LMU's Global Health Day in April 2024.
Previous editions of this conference were hosted at the University of Szeged (2020), Université Paris-Saclay (2021), and Lund University (2022) in online or hybrid format.
